ABBEY GARDENS PROJECTS
Market Garden
 History – The spring and summer of 2010 saw the creation of a 1 acre Market Garden on the proposed future site of Abbey Gardens. Using composted horse manure laid out in rows of raised beds, numerous flowers and vegetables were planted, grown and harvested for sale at the Farmers’ Market and to local retailers and restaurants. Four part-time jobs were created which we are expanding to three full time jobs for the spring/ summer of 2011. At the same time, we are tripling the size of the garden and extending our distribution network.

 Greenhouses
In the spring of 2009, a Geodesic greenhouse construction kit arrived at Abbey North. Over the course of that summer, the greenhouse was built and prepared for year-round operation. This greenhouse is intended to serve as a demonstration of ways to grow vegetable crops in an environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing way even through the long, cold Haliburton winters.

 Renewable Energy
In addition to the off-grid solar cabin, 1.7 kW wind turbine and 3.2 kW solar array already in operation at Abbey North, the Patterson's home, a 9.6 kW solar tracking array has been erected on the Abbey North property. The electricity generated by this array provides power to the grid through the Ontario Power Authority's microFIT program. The total power produced by the array is in the range of 15,000 kWh. The installation at Abbey North will be useful in designing and planning for solar power generation at the Abbey Gardens site.
