Each chicken has a Date Package that includes products, services, and experiences from community businesses and organizations in Haliburton County. To enter to win a Date Package, buy a raffle ticket. Each ticket = one entry. You can enter for as many chickens and/or ducks as you want, and can buy as many tickets as you would like. Please note, each chicken/duck has their own unique Date Package product item, so make sure you purchase tickets for the right date! Each Date Package product is titled to match the chicken/duck in the campaign.

On March 1 we’ll announce the winners on social media and via email. You can pick up your prizes any time after March 1 at the Food Hub at Abbey Gardens.

About The Fundraiser

We’re celebrating the month of love by highlighting some of our favourite Valentines – our flock. Thanks to our 2022 campaign we were able to add ducks to our flock, and so this year’s tongue-in-cheek (and adults only!) fundraiser theme is Chicken Tender: Flock Buddies Edition.

Inspired by modern dating apps and celebrating all things love, we’ve partnered with incredible businesses and organizations in Haliburton County to create eight amazing prize packages! These packages include gift cards to restaurants, tickets for date nights, gift baskets, and more, and all proceeds go toward supporting our biodiversity program at Abbey Gardens.

And remember, you win the Date Package associated with each chicken or duck, NOT an actual chicken or duck. But they’d love a visit next time you’re at Abbey Gardens!

WHY DATING A CHICKEN BIODIVERSITY IS IMPORTANT

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life in a specific ecosystem or environment. It is important in our natural habitats as well as in our “domesticated” habitats (like agriculture!). Increased variety means there is an increased chance for individual species to survive a “change”. Biodiversity increases resiliency to disease, pest outbreaks and climate change, and biodiversity in agriculture is critical to food security.

At Abbey Gardens, our mission is to educate the community about how we can live more sustainably, and biodiversity and heritage livestock is a huge part of that mission. Heritage breeds have evolved over centuries of farming to be well adapted to our environment and resilient to pests and disease. In an age of factory farms and genetically modified food sources, supporting heritage breeds is one important activity in support of food security and resilience.

Our biodiversity program uses on our chickens and ducks to teach visitors about their history, life cycles, adaptations, care and more through self-guided and structured programming specific to our flock and their benefits for biodiversity, food security, and even pest and garden maintenance!
