Description
This four-part series for children ages 8-11 years, focuses on a variety of skills needed to be confident and safe on your hikes and other trips in the backcountry. Taught experientially with the emphasis on fun, participants will learn the basic skills of backcountry camping and travel. Pick one, or all four, in this series! Each program focuses on a different topic such as map reading and navigation, tarps and shelters, fires and cooking, critter proofing your campsite, bushcraft and best camping practices. The programs run from 10 am to 2 pm. $60 per child, per program.
Registeration closes each Wednesday at midnight before each program’s start date.
Saturday Dec 7 2024: Fire Building and Trailside Cooking
The first program in the series looks at the art and science of building a cooking fire and practicing the skill by cooking over a stick stove on the trail.
Sunday February 23, 2025: Winter Shelter Building and Tarp Slinging
The challenge of staying warm in the winter is addressed in this busy program of winter shelter building and learning two key knots to tarp slinging success!
Saturday April 12, 2025: Photo Orienteering and Map & Compass Navigation
It can be fun learning to navigate through the landscape! This program will start you off with photo orienteering, a compass course and a simulated wilderness survival exercise!
Saturday June 7, 2025: Camping in Style!
Set up your own campsite in the forest and learn how to animal proof your food, purify your drinking water and follow environmental camping practices. There will be some camp bushcraft too!
